Your hotel doesn't need a Big Tech budget to sell to travel agents

Bakuun

Travel agents are one of the fastest-growing ways to fill rooms, and a small hotel can sell to them without a tech team. Many independent properties still assume agent distribution means Global Distribution System (GDS) contracts, developers and a big IT budget. So they keep emailing rate sheets and confirming bookings on WhatsApp, and lose bookings to hotels that answer faster.

Agents are growing faster than the market

Agency bookings grew 6% in 2024, double the 3% growth of the travel market overall, and outpaced every other channel (Phocuswright via TravelPulse). In the US, 25% of travel is booked through an agency, and agency sales are projected to rise from USD 128 billion in 2025 to USD 165 billion by 2028 (ASTA 2026 Fact Sheet).

Meanwhile, OTAs took 63.4% of independent hotel bookings in 2025, nearing 80% in some markets (Cloudbeds 2026 State of Independent Hotels). Agents are a way to balance that dependence. In APAC, where wholesalers, DMCs and offline agents still move a large share of rooms, the case is even stronger.

‍

The myth: you need the GDS and an IT team

The GDS is the traditional route to agents, but it is built for chains. Independents can't load themselves onto it directly; they must go through a representation company or soft brand. That means a setup fee, ongoing maintenance fees, and per-booking GDS and transaction charges on top of agent commission. Total fees of around 10% per booking are not uncommon (Hotel GDS: How To Win Corporate Travelers As An Independent Hotel).

For a 20- or 30-room property, that stack rarely pays off. And most of the agents a small APAC hotel works with aren't searching the GDS anyway; they're already messaging you.

‍

What a small hotel actually needs

To take agent bookings properly, a small property needs three things, none of which require developers:

  1. Rates agents can see at any time. Live availability and agent-specific rates, eliminating manual rate enquiries.
  2. Instant confirmation. Agents book where they get a yes first. A booking page that confirms on the spot beats a reply sent the next morning.
  3. A clear way to get paid. Payment collected in the same place as the booking, so you're not matching bank transfers to emails at month-end.

A white-label B2B booking engine covers all three. Setup is mostly entering what you already have: room types, rates, policies and the agents you work with. You keep control of your prices and terms, and you invite your own agent network instead of paying a middleman for it.

‍

Start with the agents you already have

You don't need a big budget to sell to travel agents. You need to make booking with you easier than messaging you. Start with the agents already in your inbox, move them onto a booking page, and grow from there.

B-Engine gives independent hotels their own B2B booking channel, with live rates, instant confirmation and payments built in, without hiring developers.
